Practitioner Stakeholder Leadership Programme

Strategic Stakeholder Engagement, Influence and Negotiation

Build the influence, political awareness and negotiation capability needed to align powerful stakeholders and protect project outcomes.

Move from stakeholder communication to deliberate influence and relationship strategy.

Projects succeed through people and institutions whose interests, authority, expectations and behaviour may not align. A communication plan alone is rarely enough when stakeholders control resources, approvals, information, legitimacy or organisational support.

Strategic Stakeholder Engagement, Influence and Negotiation develops the judgement and practical capability to analyse stakeholder ecosystems, work through formal and informal power, engage sponsors, influence without authority, manage conflict and negotiate under delivery pressure.

Participants apply the course tools to a realistic project environment and produce an integrated stakeholder strategy, influence plan, negotiation preparation pack and measurable engagement actions.

What participants will be able to do.

By the end of the course, participants should be able to:

  • Map the wider stakeholder ecosystem, including decision-makers, influencers, beneficiaries, opponents, intermediaries and informal networks.
  • Assess stakeholder interests, expectations, power, legitimacy, urgency, relationships and likely behaviour.
  • Distinguish communication, consultation, engagement, influence, negotiation and formal escalation.
  • Develop engagement strategies matched to stakeholder importance, project consequences and relationship conditions.
  • Influence across matrix organisations and professional boundaries without relying on positional authority.
  • Strengthen sponsor engagement, clarify expectations and create effective sponsor–project leader working relationships.
  • Recognise organisational politics, competing agendas and informal decision processes without compromising professional integrity.
  • Prepare and conduct negotiations using interests, alternatives, options, criteria, concessions and commitment discipline.
  • Manage conflict and difficult conversations while protecting trust, evidence and accountability.
  • Measure engagement effectiveness and adapt the stakeholder strategy as the project and political environment change.

Designed for professionals who must secure cooperation across organisational boundaries.

  • Project and programme managers.
  • Project directors, workstream leads and project coordinators.
  • PMO, governance and assurance professionals.
  • Project sponsors and steering-group members.
  • Business analysts, change leaders and transformation professionals.
  • Engineering, commercial and operational professionals working with critical stakeholders.

Accessible, practical and professionally relevant.

  • Some experience of projects, change initiatives or stakeholder-facing work is recommended.
  • No formal negotiation qualification is required.
  • Participants should be prepared to analyse real relationship challenges and take part in simulations.
  • Corporate cohorts may use an anonymised stakeholder environment from a current initiative.

Course information and participation.

Is this mainly a communication-skills course?

No. Communication is included, but the main focus is stakeholder strategy, influence, power, sponsorship, conflict, negotiation and measurable engagement.

Does the course address organisational politics?

Yes. Participants learn to recognise formal and informal power, competing agendas and decision pathways while maintaining ethical and professional boundaries.

Will participants practise negotiation?

Yes. The programme includes preparation, role-based negotiation, feedback and application to common project issues such as scope, resources and priorities.

Can the course be tailored to a current project?

Yes. Corporate delivery can use an anonymised stakeholder ecosystem and selected relationship challenges from a live or recent initiative.

How is this different from the project leadership course?

This programme concentrates on external and cross-boundary stakeholders, influence, sponsorship and negotiation. The project leadership course focuses more deeply on leading the project team and the temporary organisation.

Build the influence and negotiation discipline needed to align critical stakeholders.

Discuss public delivery, a leadership cohort or a tailored programme built around your organisation’s stakeholder and political environment.

INDENTRA may adapt sequencing, exercises and examples to suit the delivery format and participant profile while preserving the stated learning outcomes.
