Demonstration overview

Evaluate the Case for Change, Not Just the Cost of the Solution.

A business case brings together the rationale for change, credible alternatives, costs, benefits, financial appraisal, risk, feasibility and strategic fit. Its purpose is to support a transparent investment decision.

  • Start with the business need and target outcome.
  • Compare more than one credible solution option.
  • Separate one-time costs from recurring costs.
  • Evaluate both quantified and qualitative benefits.
  • Integrate financial attractiveness with risk, feasibility and strategic considerations.

Business Case Evaluation Quick Reference

Core Evaluation Principles

Business Need

State the problem or opportunity and the outcome the investment must achieve.

Financial Appraisal

Compare cost, benefit, cash flow, NPV, payback and other relevant measures consistently.

Non-Financial Value

Consider strategic fit, customer value, risk, feasibility and other material qualitative factors.

Recommendation

Explain why the preferred option offers the strongest overall case and state the conditions for approval.

Important: a business case is an evidence-based decision document. Financial metrics support the decision, but the highest single financial number should not automatically determine the recommendation.
