Standard Error

Estimated sampling variability of the sample mean. It decreases as sample size increases and rises with observed variability.

Margin of Error

Critical value × standard error. It is the half-width of the confidence interval.

Confidence Level

Long-run coverage rate of the interval-producing procedure under its assumptions—not a probability assigned to the fixed parameter after calculation.

Sample Size

Precision improves with √n. Roughly four times the sample size is needed to halve the margin of error, all else equal.

Benchmark

A benchmark outside the interval can indicate incompatibility with that reference at the selected confidence level, subject to method assumptions.

Planning
