Innovation Finance Simulator
Explore how investment, cash flows, discount rates, timing and uncertainty shape NPV, IRR, payback and the financial resilience of an innovation decision.
Innovation finance is about the timing, risk and resilience of value—not only whether one forecast is positive.
The simulator builds a simple innovation investment case progressively. It reveals the cash-flow pattern, calculates NPV and IRR, tests payback and uncertainty, then applies a downside challenge before presenting a management investment view.
Innovation Finance Simulator — Step by Step
Eight locked stages move from investment context through cash flows, discounting, return measures and uncertainty, then apply a downside scenario and conclude with management review.
Cash Flows, NPV, IRR, Payback and Uncertainty
Reveal the investment context to begin.
Trace the cash flows and discounted value year by year.
Test an Investment Scenario
Experiment Mode is isolated from the guided demonstration. Adjust investment, annual benefit, operating cost, discount rate and benefit confidence to observe the effect on NPV, IRR and payback.
Test innovation-finance judgement.
Innovation finance cues
NPV
Discount future net cash flows to present value and subtract the initial investment. Positive NPV indicates value above the chosen discount rate.
IRR
The discount rate that makes NPV equal to zero for a conventional cash-flow pattern. Compare it with the required return, but do not use it alone.
Payback
The time required for cumulative undiscounted cash flow to recover the initial investment. It highlights liquidity and timing, not total value.
Discount Rate
Represents the required return and time value of money used in the NPV calculation. A higher rate reduces the present value of later benefits.
Uncertainty
Separate expected benefit from confidence in achieving it. Use scenario analysis rather than pretending uncertain forecasts are certain.
Decision Logic
Combine value, return, timing and downside resilience to decide whether to proceed, stage, reshape, validate further or stop.
Use NPV, IRR and payback as complementary views, then test how the case behaves when benefits are delayed or reduced and costs rise. The decision should be resilient enough for the next level of commitment.
