Interactive Lean and Agile Management Calculator

Process Sigma Calculator

Convert units, defects and opportunities into DPMO, estimate process sigma level, compare sigma conventions and see how defect deterioration changes performance.

At a Glance
Core Formula DPMO = Defects ÷ Opportunities × 1,000,000
Typical Duration 10–15 minutes
Learning Format Direct-manipulation quality calculator
Best For Lean Six Sigma learners and improvement teams
Overview

Standardise defect performance before interpreting the sigma number.

The calculator uses observed units, defects and valid defect opportunities to calculate DPO and DPMO. It then estimates sigma using either an unshifted Z-bench conversion or a common +1.5 sigma reporting convention.

Guided Demonstration

Process Sigma Calculator — Step by Step

Eight locked stages move from the measurement context through units, defects, opportunities, calculation, sigma convention, a defect-spike challenge and management review.

Quick Reference

Process-sigma formulas and cautions

Total Opportunities

Units × valid defect opportunities per unit.

DPO

Defects ÷ total opportunities.

DPMO

DPO × 1,000,000.

Unshifted Z

Normal-distribution Z value corresponding to the opportunity yield of 1 − DPO.

+1.5 Convention

Add 1.5 to the unshifted Z-bench estimate only when that convention is explicitly intended.

Interpret Carefully

DPMO and sigma communicate defect performance; they do not identify the root cause of defects.

Key Takeaway
Define the denominator before celebrating the sigma level.

Use honest unit, defect and opportunity definitions, state the sigma-conversion convention and combine the metric with stability, customer impact and root-cause analysis.
