Learning and Development Academy Interactive Learning Tool

Course Design Canvas

Build an integrated course structure from audience need to learning outcomes, content, activities, assessment, transfer and evaluation. See how each design decision affects alignment, relevance, practice, evidence and transfer readiness.

Overview

Build the course as one aligned learning system rather than a sequence of topics.

The Course Design Canvas starts with the audience and performance need, then connects measurable outcomes, content architecture, learning activities, assessment evidence, workplace transfer and evaluation. Each part should support the same intended performance change.

The purpose is not to maximise content coverage. The purpose is to create a coherent pathway in which learners know why the course matters, practise the required capability, receive feedback, demonstrate the outcome and return to a workplace environment that supports application.

Guided Course Design

Course Design Canvas — Step by Step

Eight locked stages establish the course context, define audience need, outcomes, content, activities, assessment/transfer/evaluation, apply a design-change challenge and conclude with management review.

Experiment Mode

Test Course-Design Coherence

Experiment Mode is isolated from the guided design. Adjust need clarity, outcome quality, content relevance, practice strength, assessment alignment, transfer support and evaluation evidence to observe course coherence and implementation readiness.

Knowledge Check

Test course-design judgement.

Quick Reference

Course-design canvas cues

Audience & Need

Define who must perform differently, the performance gap, context, prior capability, constraints and why learning is an appropriate part of the intervention.

Learning Outcomes

Write measurable outcomes using observable performance. State what learners will do, under what conditions and to what standard where relevant.

Content Architecture

Include only content needed to achieve the outcomes. Sequence from enabling knowledge to supported practice, integration and increasingly realistic application.

Learning Activities

Use methods that require learners to practise the capability, make decisions, receive feedback and reflect. Do not rely on presentation when the objective requires performance.

Assessment

Generate evidence at the same cognitive or performance level as the outcome. Define scoring criteria and use formative checks before the final assessment.

Transfer & Evaluation

Plan job support, manager reinforcement, application opportunities and follow-up. Evaluate learning, behaviour and targeted results at appropriate times.

Key Takeaway
A strong course is an aligned pathway from performance need to workplace application—not a container for content.

Start with the learner and required performance, design evidence before content, create realistic practice, and plan transfer and evaluation as part of the course from the beginning.
