A milestone marks a significant event, approval, contractual point, handoff, phase transition or completion condition. In a schedule network it normally has zero duration, but it still inherits dates and float from the logic around it.
- Connect explicit START and END boundary nodes to the schedule network.
- Use zero-duration milestone nodes to represent significant control points.
- Calculate milestone dates from predecessor and successor logic rather than assigning arbitrary dates without network support.
- Distinguish critical milestones from milestones that have schedule float.
- Compare baseline milestone dates with current forecast dates and variance.
- Escalate milestone slippage when it consumes available float or threatens downstream commitments.
