Use Milestones as Zero-Duration Control Points, Not as Activities.

A milestone marks a significant event, approval, contractual point, handoff, phase transition or completion condition. In a schedule network it normally has zero duration, but it still inherits dates and float from the logic around it.

  • Connect explicit START and END boundary nodes to the schedule network.
  • Use zero-duration milestone nodes to represent significant control points.
  • Calculate milestone dates from predecessor and successor logic rather than assigning arbitrary dates without network support.
  • Distinguish critical milestones from milestones that have schedule float.
  • Compare baseline milestone dates with current forecast dates and variance.
  • Escalate milestone slippage when it consumes available float or threatens downstream commitments.

Network rule: every activity-on-node network in this tool includes an explicit START node and END node. Milestones have zero duration but still participate in logic, dates and float. A milestone date should not be treated as an isolated promise disconnected from the schedule network that supports it.
