Project Complexity Assessment
Assess project complexity across six dimensions, calculate a complexity profile and overall classification, identify dominant complexity drivers, and translate the assessment into proportionate governance and management responses.
Assess Complexity Before Selecting the Management Approach.
Project complexity reflects more than size. A project may become difficult to govern because of strategic uncertainty, stakeholder dynamics, technology novelty, organizational change, delivery interdependencies or external constraints. This assessment evaluates six dimensions using a 1–5 scale and converts the pattern into a practical management response.
- Strategic & Scope: novelty, ambiguity, breadth and stability of objectives and scope.
- Stakeholder & Governance: number, influence, alignment and decision complexity.
- Technical & Solution: technology novelty, integration, architecture and solution uncertainty.
- Organizational & Change: behavioral change, capability, culture and operating-model disruption.
- Delivery & Interdependencies: dependencies, interfaces, schedule pressure and coordination burden.
- External & Commercial: regulation, suppliers, contracts, market exposure and external uncertainty.

Focus Mode keeps the guided-learning pane and complexity dashboard together while hiding surrounding page content. Dashboard Full Screen shows only the complexity dashboard and can be launched from Focus Mode. Exiting Dashboard Full Screen returns to Focus Mode if Focus Mode was active.
Complexity Dimension Summary
Dimension scores and interpretations appear progressively with the guided assessment.
| Dimension | Score | Classification | Illustrative Evidence | Management Implication |

Experiment Mode is isolated from the guided example. Change the six dimension scores from 1 to 5 and recalculate the overall complexity classification and dominant drivers.

Complexity Dimensions and Responses
| Dimension | What to Examine | Typical Management Response When High |
|---|---|---|
| Strategic & Scope | Novelty, ambiguity, scope breadth, objective stability | Stronger sponsor alignment, staged decisions, tighter scope governance |
| Stakeholder & Governance | Stakeholder power, alignment, decision rights, governance layers | Explicit decision architecture, escalation paths, active stakeholder strategy |
| Technical & Solution | Technology novelty, interfaces, architecture, technical uncertainty | Prototyping, architecture assurance, specialist expertise, integration testing |
| Organizational & Change | Behavioral change, culture, capability, operating-model disruption | Change leadership, readiness assessment, adoption planning, capability building |
| Delivery & Interdependencies | Interfaces, dependencies, concurrency, schedule pressure | Integrated planning, interface management, systems coordination, stronger controls |
| External & Commercial | Regulation, contracts, suppliers, market and geopolitical exposure | Commercial strategy, regulatory engagement, contingency, supplier governance |
