A Power-Interest Grid is a simple stakeholder-analysis tool that helps a project team decide how much attention different stakeholders require. Power represents the stakeholder's ability to influence the project or its outcomes; interest represents the degree to which the stakeholder is affected by, concerned about, or actively engaged with the project.
- Review a stakeholder register before making assumptions about influence or interest.
- Assess power separately from interest using a consistent 1–5 scale.
- Plot stakeholders on the grid only after both dimensions have been assessed.
- Use the four quadrants to guide engagement effort—not to stereotype people.
- Prioritize stakeholders within a quadrant using context, proximity, attitude and critical decisions.
- Reassess the grid when project phases, decisions or external conditions change.
